About PaperDeed
PaperDeed is a self-help document service. This page explains who writes the forms, how the state rules are checked, and what we do when a rule changes.

What this site does
PaperDeed builds plain-language legal forms for common personal and small business transactions: bills of sale, deeds, powers of attorney, a promissory note, a living will, a last will and testament, eviction notices and an NDA. You answer questions, see the finished page before you pay, and download a PDF and a DOCX that you can print or edit.
The site is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. A template cannot tell you whether a transfer is a good idea, whether a tax applies, or whether your situation needs a court order. Those questions belong with a licensed attorney in your state.
How a document is written
Each document starts from the clauses a transaction actually needs, written in ordinary English. The parties, the property or money, the promises, the consequences of a breach and the signing block are separate sections so you can see what you are agreeing to before you download.
Every clause is rendered with the answers you type and tested in every state and the District of Columbia before it ships. If a state has a special requirement, the document adds a state clause or changes the signature block rather than hiding the difference in a footnote.
How a state rule is checked
For each document and state, we read the current statute or the agency page that governs the signing step. We record four things: whether a notary is required, how many witnesses are required, the notice period where one applies, and a citation that a reader can check. The citation is printed in the builder, on the state guide and inside the document.
Where the state publishes the statute or form on an official site, the citation links to it. Several states publish their code only through a paid database, so not every citation is a link. A citation without a link still names the exact section, which is what a clerk or an attorney needs to find it.
Every rule was last reviewed on October 20, 2026. We check again when a state amends its probate, property, landlord-tenant or advance-directive law, and when a reader sends us a correction with a citation. The date on a document, state or guide page is the date that page was last checked.
Who works on it
Nora Whitfield
Editorial lead
Writes and maintains the document templates and the plain-language pages around them.
Samuel Okafor
Rules editor
Checks each state rule against the current statute or agency page and records the citation.
These are the people named on every document, state and guide page. When a page needs a legal opinion rather than a rule citation, we say so and point you to a licensed attorney in your state.
Corrections and updates
If a citation is wrong, a link is stale or a rule has changed, email support@paperdeed.com with the page address, the state and the section you are looking at. We check the statute, correct the page and the builder together, and update the review date. A correction that changes a signing requirement is made before the next download, not held for a later release.
The same process applies to a wording problem in a template. Tell us which clause and what it should say. We will not rewrite a document to fit one person's dispute, but we will fix a clause that is unclear or that does not match the law it cites.
What we do not do
We do not represent you, we do not review your answers, and we do not file a document with a court, a recorder or an agency. We do not guarantee that a clerk will accept a form, because recording offices apply local rules that change without notice. We do not sell legal advice, and we do not share your document answers with advertisers.
PaperDeed is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We provide self-help templates and general information about signing rules. If you are unsure whether a document fits your situation, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
