Bill of sale

A bill of sale is the receipt that proves who sold what, to whom, on what date, and for how much. It is the document a buyer reaches for when a title office, insurer or lender asks for proof of the transaction, and the document a seller keeps when the buyer later claims the item was not as described.

This builder produces a plain one-page form for goods sold as is, including furniture, tools, equipment, boats and trailers. The wording changes with the state you pick, and the state's signing requirements appear beside the preview before you download.

Bill of sale

STATE OF TEXAS

This bill of sale is made on October 12, 2026 between Jordan M. Reyes, of 412 Oak Street, Austin, TX 78701 (the seller), and Priya N. Shah, of 88 Cedar Lane, Round Rock, TX 78664 (the buyer). The sale takes place in the State of Texas, and Texas law governs this document.

1. Sale of goods

The seller sells and the buyer buys the following property: 2019 Trek Marlin 6 bicycle, charcoal gray, 29 inch wheels, with front and rear lights.

The property is identified by serial number or other marking WTU1234567. The buyer has inspected the property or has had a chance to inspect it before signing.

2. Condition and as-is statement

The property is sold as is, where is, with all faults. The seller gives no warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, and no oral promise about the property changes this document. Condition notes, if any: Used. Scratches on the left crank arm and a small tear on the saddle. Sold with the lights, lock and floor pump..

3. Price and payment

The buyer pays the seller $650.00 (Six hundred fifty dollars), by cash, on the date of sale. The seller acknowledges receiving that amount in full.

4. Ownership

The seller states that the seller owns the property, has the right to sell it, and has not sold it to anyone else. The property is free of liens and claims, except any lien the buyer has agreed to in writing.

5. Delivery and risk

The buyer takes possession on October 12, 2026. From that date the buyer bears the risk of loss or damage. The buyer is responsible for moving the property.

6. Additional terms

The seller will deliver the bicycle to the buyer's address on the date of sale.

7. Entire agreement

This document is the complete agreement about the sale. Any change must be written and signed by both parties. If one part is unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. The laws of the State of Texas govern this bill of sale.

  • The buyer's full legal name and mailing address.
  • A clear description of the item, including make, model, year and serial or VIN where there is one.

What the form includes

Parties and date

The seller, the buyer, the date of sale and the state whose law governs the form.

Item description

A description with room for make, model, year, serial number and condition notes.

Price and payment

The price in numbers and words, the payment method, and a receipt acknowledgment.

As-is statement

A clear statement that the buyer takes the item in its current condition, unless you turn it off.

Ownership promise

The seller confirms the item is theirs to sell and is free of other claims, or lists any lien.

Signatures

Signature, printed name and date lines for both parties, plus a notary block when the state requires one.

After you sign

Give the buyer the original

Sign two copies and give one to the buyer. Keep your copy with the payment record. A phone photo is useful, but the paper copy is what an office will ask to see.

Transfer the title separately

A bill of sale does not transfer a vehicle title. Complete the title assignment on the certificate of title and file it with your state's motor vehicle office. Some states require the seller's signature on the title to be notarized.

Keep the tax question in mind

Some states collect sales or use tax when an item is registered, and the bill of sale may be the document that sets the taxable price. Keep the form with the registration paperwork.

Questions people ask

Does a bill of sale need to be notarized?

For ordinary goods, no state requires notarization. A notary is still useful if the buyer wants proof that the seller signed, and some vehicle title offices require a notarized signature on the title itself. The builder shows the rule for the state you pick.

Is a bill of sale the same as a title?

No. The title is the state's ownership record for a vehicle or boat. A bill of sale is evidence of the sale. For a vehicle you usually need both: the signed title to transfer ownership and a bill of sale to show the price and date.

Can I use this form for a car sold as is?

Yes, but the vehicle bill of sale on this site adds the details a title office expects, including the VIN, odometer reading and lien information. Use that form if you are selling a car, truck, motorcycle or trailer.

What if the buyer pays in installments?

A bill of sale records a completed sale. If the buyer pays over time, use a promissory note for the payment terms and a bill of sale that says when ownership passes. Do not hand over the item before you are comfortable with the payment arrangement.

Does the form need a witness?

Most states do not require a witness for a bill of sale. The signing panel tells you what your state requires and adds witness lines when the rule calls for them.
